Travis Scott – Utopia, Circus Maximus

In anticipation of Travis Scott’s Utopia – Circus Maximus concert at Eden Park, artist Matt Griffin was commissioned to create a street art mural of the rapper in the stadium’s Players’ Tunnel.

Matt’s vision was to capture the spirit of the tour and Travis Scott’s larger-than-life presence as both a creator and visionary. The mural features Travis with his hand extended, engulfed in vibrant blue flames—an homage to his nickname, La Flame, a force of innovation and change. The flames, akin to a superhuman power, symbolise his relentless drive to push the boundaries of art and culture. His intense gaze, framed by futuristic shades, communicates not just confidence, but a focus on shaping the future.

As Matt explains, The addition of classical architectural elements like the towering pillar against a backdrop of cosmic skies symbolises the merging of timelessness with the futuristic world that Travis envisions. This links directly to his Utopia tour, where the past, present, and future converge in an idealised world that blends technology with human creativity.

The mural’s interactive nature allows viewers to stand before it, making it appear as though Travis Scott is reaching out to grab them, drawing them into his utopian vision. The moon and clouds behind him heighten the ethereal atmosphere, making his presence feel as though it transcends the mural itself, pulling the audience into a limitless, innovative future.

The piece now is now permanently etched on the walls of Eden Park, in a celebration of Travis Scott’s October 2024 performance at Eden Park.

Silent Giant

This long-extinct gigantic species was once the national symbol of New Zealand which was known as ‘the land of the Moa’, however lost its status to the now iconic Kiwi.

The Moa is the largest of the Dinornis Genus and is known to have inhabited the Lowland Canterbury region, usually foraging in the forests.

Standing at an impressive 2 metres tall, this life-sized painting of the giant Moa is a world-first, offering the unique opportunity to stand in the awe-inspiring presence of this magnificent bird. The painting captures the essence of the Moa by depicting its distinctive features and remarkable stature.

Unfortunately, there are some details about the Moa’s appearance that are still unknown, including their eye colour, feather appearance, and skin texture. Because of this, the artist has taken creative license to depict them in consultation with specialists.

Caught in a Snare

This evocative painting captures the essence of Wahaakiaki, the formidable Māori warrior, depicted in a resolute battle stance against the backdrop of the majestic Waitakere Ranges.

The subject is portrayed in a stance reflective of his legendary courage and unwavering determination as he prepares for the infamous battle in Paruroa. The scenic backdrop of the Waitakere Ranges serves as a testament to the profound connection between the Māori people and the land, highlighting the significance of the natural landscape of Aotearoa’s history.

The Māori warrior pictured represents the historical figure, Wahaakiaki, a man who lived in New Zealand in the c.1740s. Wahaakiaki was a famous chief of the Kaipara region and is known for his battle against the Paramount Chief of Tamki Makauau, at the time, Kiwi Tamaki. It is said that it was a battle of 300 vs 3000 and Wahaakiaki and his warriors ended up winning through sheer courage and battle strategy.
