Eden Park celebrates King’s Coronation with gigantic Victoria sponge
May 5, 2023Eden Park, New Zealand’s national stadium, is excited to announce a special treat to mark the coronation of King Charles III.
To honour the special occasion, Eden Park’s world-renowned executive chef, Julian Gill and his team are making a gigantic Victoria sponge, a classic British cake that is fit for royalty. The cake will be on display in the stadium’s Grand Hall during Saturday’s Super Rugby game which sees the Blues take on Moana Pasifika, and then available for fans to devour.
Eden Park CEO, Nick Sautner said “We’re delighted to be recognising this historic moment and to celebrate the coronation of the new King with a delicious and classic British desert. Our talented chefs have put their heart and soul into creating a mouth-watering Victoria sponge along with hundreds of quiches, which we know will be enjoyed by fans who come to the game this weekend.
“We regularly host guests from all over the world and have close ties with the Commonwealth. Many people will remember back to 1983, when thousands of New Zealanders filled our stadium to meet the future king on his first royal tour with Prince William, who was only nine months old at the time.
“Eden Park is an integral part of Aotearoa New Zealand’s community. The coronation of our new King is not just a historic occasion, but also a time to come together as a community and celebrate our shared values and traditions. We hope that this special treat will create a sense of community and bring joy to all those who taste it.
