Eden Park hosts celebration of the landmark New Zealand – UK Free Trade Agreement

Eden Park was privileged to host the momentous celebration of the landmark New Zealand – UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) tonight, an event that symbolises the deep-rooted relationship between our great countries. This historic occasion marked a significant milestone in our nation’s commitment to fostering global cooperation, economic growth, and strengthened international ties.

Eden Park CEO, Nick Sautner said “We were delighted to host this important celebration at Eden Park as it represented not only our strong economic relationship with the UK, but also the deep-rooted connection, and rivalry, we share on the sporting field.

“Eden Park has been the stage for many unforgettable moments that have united fans from both nations in their passion for sport. The encounters between New Zealand and UK sports teams, steeped in tradition and fierce competition, have been nothing short of legendary.

“In 1930, Eden Park hosted its inaugural British and Irish Lions matches, in 1973 England became the first country from the British Isles to beat New Zealand in rugby at home and 2017 saw the two teams draw 15 – 15 in the very last moments of play. Cricket has also seen its fair share of memorable moments – while 1955 was a time many New Zealanders would prefer to forget with the home team collapsing at 26 all out against England, in 2018 Eden Park hosted the country’s first day-night test, bowling England out for 58 in the first innings.

“Through our economic ties and sporting encounters we have forged a strong bond that transcends borders and strengthens our bilateral relationship. We are proud to have developed a partnership with Twickenham Stadium which provides unique opportunities for both our teams to learn, expand their stadium knowledge and form networks and bonds that are mutually beneficial.
